Online interview tips

Many employers opt for online interviews with potential hires for several reasons. Firstly, conducting interviews virtually saves time and resources for both the employer and the candidate, eliminating the need for travel and accommodating busy schedules. Additionally, online interviews allow for a wider pool of applicants to be considered, regardless of geographical location, fostering diversity and inclusivity in the hiring process. Moreover, technological advancements have made it easier to assess candidates’ suitability through video conferencing tools, enabling employers to gauge communication skills, professionalism, and cultural fit effectively.

If you have an online interview coming up, you should be just as prepared for this as you would in person. In today’s blog we share a few of our top tips around online interviewing.

Some of our top online interview tips are:

  • Know the platform you are using & check you have an updated version & that your camera and mic work well in advance of the call.
  • Make sure your laptop is charged.
  • Make sure you don’t have load shedding scheduled & if you do & you have a generator inform them that if the power does go off you will be back on within a couple of minutes.
  • Check your internet connection.
  • Make sure you allocate enough time for the call.
  • Make sure you won’t be distracted by external things like people/animals.
  • Dress as you would if you were in-person. – head to toe! (don’t be wearing PJ pants underneath as being fully dressed up gets you into the right mindset.)
  • Have some water to hand.
  • Make sure you have good lighting.
  • Jump on the call at least 5 minutes before.
  • Have notes ready.
  • Have your diary/schedule to hand in case there & then on the call they ask you what your availability is for an in-person interview.

It’s really as simple as this!

Some of the most common platforms used are:

  • Zoom
  • Google Meet
  • Teams
  • Zoho
  • Skype

It is a great idea to do a trial run with a friend or family member, not only of the interview with regards to being prepared with questions & answers but actually doing the interview online so you feel confident on the day.

Hopefully it goes well and typically the next step will be for the hiring manager to then invite you for an in-person interview, but don’t worry if they don’t say this straight away, they may prefer to get back to you after the interview. If, however, they do, make sure you have a pen and paper to jot down the day and time and if you have a busy schedule have your calendar to hand so that you can confirm if this works for you.
