Onboarding and Inboarding – what is the difference?

There is a good chance you may be familiar with the term ”Onboarding” but possibly not with the lesser known but equally important topic of ”Inboarding”.

In this blog we talk through what both mean as well as why both are critical to the success of your business as every good business owner knows your team is the heart of your company.

Understanding Onboarding: Onboarding is the initial process that new employees undergo when they join a company. This phase involves introducing them to the company’s culture, values, policies, and procedures. The goals of onboarding include:

  1. Orientation: Providing essential information about the company’s history, structure, culture and mission.
  2. Job Familiarisation: Offering a comprehensive understanding of the employee’s specific role, responsibilities, and performance expectations.
  3. Social Integration: Facilitating connections with colleagues and supervisors to help the employee feel welcomed and part of the team.
  4. Compliance and Training: Ensuring that employees are well-versed in company policies, safety protocols, and any necessary training.

Understanding Inboarding: Inboarding, on the other hand, comes after the initial onboarding phase and focuses on the continuous development and engagement of employees. Inboarding aims to:

  1. Enhance Skills: Provide ongoing training and development opportunities to improve employees’ skills and expertise in their roles.
  2. Encourage Growth: Identify potential career paths within the company and create avenues for employees to advance and take on new challenges.
  3. Nurture Engagement: Foster a sense of belonging and loyalty by consistently reinforcing the company’s values and supporting employees’ well-being.
  4. Feedback and Collaboration: Establish open channels for feedback, communication, and collaboration, allowing employees to contribute ideas and voice concerns.

The Importance of Both: Both onboarding and inboarding are not only important but vital as they will propel your company’s success.

Here are a few reasons why you need both…

  1. Retention: Effective onboarding can significantly improve employee retention by helping new hires feel connected and confident in their roles from the start. Inboarding, on the other hand, ensures that employees remain engaged and motivated to stay with the company long-term.
  2. Performance: A well-executed onboarding process sets the foundation for employees to perform well in their roles. Inboarding then takes it a step further by continuously improving their skills, leading to enhanced performance and productivity.
  3. Company Culture: Onboarding introduces new employees to the company’s culture, while inboarding sustains and reinforces that culture over time, creating a cohesive and positive work environment.
  4. Innovation: Inboarding promotes ongoing learning and collaboration, fostering an environment where employees feel empowered to contribute innovative ideas and drive the company forward.
