Cover letter template

A Cover letter can be an excellent ”tool” to use to get an employers attention.

Typically Cv’s are read by your average recruiter or employer in under 10 seconds so a clear, concise and memorable cover letter may make the difference between your Cv being ”filed” or you getting a positive response which is of course what you want!

I would recommend your cover letter being the actual text of your email to the employer and not as a separate attachment as this is then a guarantee they will see it and it isn’t professional to submit an email which doesn’t have any content in it and many companies wont even look further at your application without text in your email.

It is critical that you have researched the company if you are applying directly to them before you submit this.

If you are however applying to a recruiter and you don’t know yet the name of the company then you would leave out the ‘I am very interested to work for ‘name of company’ sentence.

Remember this is not a summary of your Cv, you are only picking out parts that stand out and related to the position you are applying for.

Here is a sample template (with added notes) that you can type out and input your own details into based on the position you are applying for, the company you are applying to and your own experience and skills.

EXAMPLE TEMPLATE:

Dear NAME OF HIRING MANAGER, OR RECRUITER (if you dont have the name you can say: Dear Hiring Manager)

I am applying for the role of …………………………………….

I feel I am a suitable candidate for this position based on my professional experience ………………………………….YEARS OF EXPERIENCE/POSITION/SKILLS/QUALIFICATION

My achievements have been …………………………………………………..ONLY LIST ACHIEVEMENTS HERE IF THEY ARE RELATED TO THE POSITION AND CAN PROVE YOU CAN PERFORM IN THIS ROLE. IF YOU DON’T HAVE ANY, DON’T INCLUDE THIS.

IF there were requirements for the role that you dont quite fit then state you dont have X requirement but give a motivational reason as to why you should still be considered.

3 Examples of these would be:

  1. I do not yet have a drivers license and see that the company requires this, I however do have a learner license and will be booking for my test at the end of this month and I would make sure I have this in place upon starting this position, should I be successful

2. I do not have experience on Nightsbridge reservations system, I however have worked on Panstrat and feel that due to me having the background knowledge on reservations programs and being a fast learner I would pick this up very quickly

3. I see the requirements are for someone with 5 years work experience in this role, I have 3, however what I lack in experience in years I more than make up for in passion for the job

(Please note you should only be applying for a position, if you fit the vast majority of the requirements)

I am very interested to work for NAME OF COMPANY and I feel I could be a great asset and add value by ………………………………………………….
